Wright State meets IUPUI in Horizon League women’s basketball semifinals

Wright State’s women’s basketball team punched its ticket to Detroit with a 83-60 win against the Oakland Grizzlies last Tuesday. With all the top-seeded teams in the Horizon League advancing, Wright State is set to play the No.4 seed IUPUI Jaguars on Monday at 1 p.m.

Wright State 
The Raiders (25-6, 16-2) beat the Oakland Grizzlies handily in the Nutter Center last Tuesday for the Horizon League Quarterfinals. In the opening round, the Raiders were led on offense by Michal Miller, who scored 22 points in the win against the Grizzlies, 14 of which came in the first half on Tuesday night.Mackenzie Taylor added 16 points, and Emily Vogelpohl tallied 10 points while also tying Symone Simmons for a game-high eight rebounds. In the last four minutes of the game, the Raiders went on an 18-3 run against the Grizzlies.

On the season, Wright State is led on offense by Mackenzie Taylor and Michal Miller, both of whom are averaging 11.8 points per game. Those numbers are good for 9th and 10th in scoring average in the Horizon League. Simmons recently became Wright State’s first player in basketball history to record 1000 career rebounds. Simmons is ranked first in the league in rebounds with an average of 10.0 each game.

The Jaguars (20-10, 13-5) won on Tuesday night in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament 60-44 against No. 8 seed Northern Kentucky Norse. A high-scoring fourth quarter propelled the Jags past the Norse to punch their ticket to Detroit. IUPUI was led by senior Sydney Hall, who finished with a game-high 16 points on 7-for-9 shooting.

Recently named Horizon League Player of the Year, Macee Williams leads the Jaguars on offense with a 16.3 scoring average. Williams is also second in the conference in rebounding, where she hauls in an average of 8.9 each outing.

Series History

  • Wright State won both previous meetings this season with scores of 66-59 and 78-75 (OT)
  • Last season the Raiders bounced the Jags in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament 60-52
  • Wright State is 11-2 all-time against IUPUI
  • Head Coach Katrina Merriweather is 4-1 against IUPUI during her tenure

Next Up
 A victory on Monday afternoon will send them to the finals, played Tuesday at 12:00 PM.  Semi-final games will be on ESPN+, and the final will air live on ESPNU.   

The Raiders currently are one win shy of tying Wright State women’s basketball record for most wins in a season. A win against the Jags would tie the record set in the 2013-14 season.
