In their second NCAA Tournament appearance as a Division I program, the No.13 seed Wright State Raiders fell at the No. 4 seed Texas A&M Aggies, 84-61.
The Aggies were aided by a big first quarter against the Raiders and by hot shooting from behind the arc. The Raiders end their season with 27 wins, the most ever by a Wright State women’s basketball team. The Aggies will advance to play No. 5 seed Marquette on Sunday.
Texas A&M’s Chennedy Carter would lead all players in the game with 27 points. The Raiders’ Angel Baker would put on an equally impressive performance with 22 points, three assists, and two steals. Michal Miller would tally 12 points, all of which came in the second half. Mackenzie Taylor added 10 points and pulled in six rebounds. Symone Simmons led all players with 13 rebounds and added seven points from the field.
Symone Simmons was the first Raider on the boards against the Aggies with an early layup and then followed with a three-pointer. The Aggies would begin to hit their stride and go on a 9-1 run against the Raiders. Angel Baker would add two points but All-SEC teamer Chennedy Carter would show her handles and range against the Raiders by tallying 11 points in the first 5:20 of the game. Carter had been out for the Aggies during their SEC Tournament run with a hand injury. To break the Raiders’ scoring drought, Anisja Harris would hit a long two to make the score 8-20 in favor of the Aggies. Angel Baker would cut into the Aggies’ lead with a three-pointer. An Aggie three-pointer and another score by Chennedy Carter would double up the score against the Raiders. The quarter would end with an Aggies score in the waning seconds to make the score 13-31
The quarter would start with Chennedy Carter converting one shot from the line for the Aggies. A jumper from Angel Baker then a driving layup from Mackenzie Taylor would make the score 17-32 with 7:28 on the clock. Three unsuccessful shots coming off of offensive rebounds would prevent the Raiders from matching the Aggies scoring in the quarter. After collecting an offensive rebound, Symone Simmons would get on the boards in the quarter to make the score 21-36. Before the media timeout, the Aggies would get one more score from N’dea Jones. Angel Baker would put on a handles performance after finding Teneshia Dixonwith a no-look behind the back pass in the lane. After collecting the ball in the lane, Dixon would end the impressive play with two points to make the score 23-38. One possession later, Dixon would add two points from the foul line. With just over a minute remaining the half, Tyler Frierson would draw a foul and add one point from the line. A&M’s Kayla Wells would sink a three-pointer but Wright State’s Mackenzie Taylor would answer with a three of her own to make the score 29-42.
The first minutes would be all Aggies as they outscored the Raiders 8-2 after halftime. Michal Miller would get her first points of the game with a layup and then add two more on the next possession to cut the Aggies’ lead to 15 points. Symone Simmonswould come up with a powerful block against A&M’s Chennedy Carter while she drove to the basket. Mackenzie Taylor would sink her second three of the game to make the score 38-52 with 5:46 on the clock. Angel Baker would put in a three on the next possession to pull the Raiders back within 13 points. The Aggies would go on a 9-0 streak against the Raiders to build their lead back to 20 points. Angel Baker would end the Raiders’ dryspell with another three-pointer. After an Aggies foul shot, Angel Bakerwould add two more points off of a jumper. The quarter would end 46-67 in favor of the Aggies.
Michal Miller would open up scoring for the Raiders in the final quarter with a jumper and then one point from the line. The Aggies would then set their season record for three-pointers two possessions later. Looking at the 25 point deficit, Angel Baker would get a three-pointer to drop after receiving the ball from Symone Simmons. Before the media timeout, Angel Baker would put in a layup with 6:01 on the clock. With 4:21 remaining, Michal Miller would force a steal then finish the play with two points for the Raiders. One possession later Angel Baker would put in two points to make the score 58-80. After two points from the Aggies,Michal Miller would sink a three for the Raiders. With under two minutes in the game, A&M would add two points from a layup to finish the game up 84-61.
