Sinclair baseball takes three out of four on the road at Cuyahoga CC

The defending OCCAC champion Sinclair Community College baseball team opened conference play this past weekend on the road at Cuyahoga Community College. After splitting the opening doubleheader on Saturday, Sinclair won both games on Sunday allowing the Tartans to take three out of four in the series.

Game 1

The Pride opened their OCCAC title defense on the road Saturday at Cuyahoga facing All-American pitcher Brock Begue. After a scoreless first inning, the Pride took an early lead scoring the first run of the contest in the top half of the second when Hunter Hughes score on a wild pitch. The Tartans added two more runs in the top of the third inning when Jeremiah Clark hit a two-out two run homerun to right center, putting the Tartans ahead 3-0. The score would remain the same until the top half of the sixth inning when Brandon DeWitt drove in what would stand to be the game winning RBI putting the Pride up 4-0.

Pride starter Alex Theis was in control for much of the game. Theis carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, striking out the side in the second and finishing with eight on the day. Theis lost his no-hit bid in the sixth allowing a leadoff single to begin the inning. Following the single, Cuyahoga first baseman Williams hit a first pitch homerun to right field cutting the lead in half. After another single, the Tartans turned to Chaney Morgan who would strike out two of the three batters he faced. Pride closer Jakob Brustoski recorded the final four outs of the game to earn his fifth save of the season.

Game 2

The Tartans once again took an early lead in game two of the series scoring two runs in the top of the third inning when Mike Sears hit a two-run shot to right field. Cuyahoga answered in the bottom half of the third pushing four runs across to take a 4-2 lead. Offensively, the Tartans would only have two batters reach base safely over the last four innings. Cuyahoga added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth extending their lead to what would be a final of score of 6-2.

Final Score: Cuyahoga 6, #3 Sinclair 2

Game 3

The offense exploded for fifteen runs on thirteen hits in game one on Sunday’s double header. The Tartans scored four runs in each of the third, fourth and sixth innings. Alex Jacobs, Mike Sears and Matt Meyer lead the way offensively driving in three runs each. Matt Meyer had the only long ball of the game, a three-run shot in the top of the third, his second on the season.

Pride starter AJ Peter was excellent in earning his fourth win of the season. Peter surrendered just one run on five hits over six innings of work. His ten strikeouts were a season high.

Game 4

For the fourth consecutive game the Pride got on the board first when Alex Jacobs hit his first career home run, a solo shot to right field to give the Pride a 1-0 in the top of the first.

With a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third Cuyahoga would take their first lead of the day plating four runs on a hit and two errors. The score would remain a 4-2 deficit for the Tartans until the top of the fifth inning. Alex Jacobs and Mike Sears got things started with back to back singles, both would later score on passed balls by the catcher to even the score at 4-4.

Jeremiah Clark extended the inning with a backside double, he would advance to third on a throwing error before scoring the go-ahead run on sac fly from Matt Meyer taking a 5-4 lead. The Pride would add one more run in the top of the seventh inning.

Logan Sabo earned the win for the Tartans working three and a third innings of relief. Freshman Drake Bauer recorded the final five outs, four strikeouts, to pick up his first save of the season.
