Wright State’s Malachi Smith announces that he will transfer

Horizon League All-Freshman Team guard Malachi Smith (5.4 points, 2.9 rebounds) announced via Twitter that he is leaving the Wright State University men’s basketball program.

Wright State expects to have depth and talent at guard with the return of senior Cole Gentry and sophomore Jaylon Hall, and highly regarded recruits Andre Harris, Trey Calvin and Noah Freidel; yet the news of Smith’s departure is disappointing. After last season, Wright State received similar news when Everett Winchester left the program after a strong freshman campaign.

Wright State head coach Scott Nagy and his staff now have two scholarships open. The Raiders won the 2018-2019 Horizon League regular season title and lost to rival Northern Kentucky in the conference tournament championship. Wright State then fell at Clemson, 75-69, in the NIT to finish 21-14.
