Wright State edges UD, 8-7; prepares for Horizon League showdown series with UIC

Wright State improved to 29-13 overall by defeating the crosstown rival University of Dayton Flyers, 8-7, on Wednesday at UD.

Damon Dues, who was named Horizon League Player of the Week for his performance last week, led the Raiders with three hits, two RBI, two runs and a stolen base. His RBI single in the top of the eighth gave Wright State a 8-5 lead and proved to be the game-winning hit.

Seth Gray belted a three-run home run in the third inning, which lifted the Raiders ahead after UD grabbed a 4-2 lead in the second.

With non-conference wins over Bowling Green and UD, Wright State heads into the weekend series against Illinois-Chicago with momentum. UIC sits atop the Horizon League at 11-6 with the Raiders a half-game behind at 11-7. First pitch Friday at Nischwitz Stadium is 6 p.m.

SCORING RECAPS
1st Inning – The Raiders jumped out to an early advantage in Wednesday’s contest, as Damon Dues continued his hot hitting with an RBI single, and Zach Weatherford brought Dues around to score with an RBI double to put Wright State on top by two runs before the Flyers got to swing the bat.
3rd Inning – After the Flyers answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, the Raiders answered right back with four of their own on a three-run home run from Seth Gray, and an RBI single from Chase Slone to re-establish a two-run advantage at 6-4.
7th Inning – An Alex Alders RBI double brought the Wright State advantage back to two runs following a a Dayton sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
8th Inning – Damon Dues cemented the win for the Raiders with his second RBI single of the game, bringing the score to 8-5.
9th Inning – The Flyers added two runs, but fell just one run short and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.
