UD opens weekend series with win over St. Joseph’s

The University of Dayton rallied for an 11-6 win over St. Joseph’s in the opener of a three-game weekend series Friday at DP&L Stadium.

Dayton is now 23-19-1 with the win,  while Saint Joseph’s drops to 15-21 on the season.

KEY MOMENT
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Flyers came out of the bottom of the second with two outs in a strong way. Benjamin Blackwell and Tate Hagan hit back-to-back doubles to put a run on the board for the Flyers. Takahiro Yamada is then able to follow up by reaching first on an error, allowing Hagan to work his way to third. With two runners on base, Mitchell Garrity hit a three-run homerun to right field to put the Flyers in the lead by a 4-2 margin.

Top 1: Saint Joseph’s 2, Dayton 0.
Brendan Hueth scored on a wild pitch by Hunter Wolfe, then on the next play, James McConnon scored off of a sacrifice fly to right field from Dominic Cuoci.

Bottom 2: Dayton 4, Saint Joseph’s 2.

Three consecutive singles from Eddie PursingerRiley Tirotta and Jay Curtis loaded the bases, then Benjamin Blackwell hit a sac fly to left field, bringing in Pursinger.

Bottom 5: Dayton 6, Saint Joseph’s 2.
Connor Echols led off for the Flyers in the bottom of the fifth and doubled to left field. Riley Tirotta then doubled to left center, bringing in Echols for another Flyer run.

Top 6: Dayton 6, Saint Joseph’s 3.
Dominic Couci hit a homerun to right field to open the inning.

Bottom 6: Dayton 11, Saint Joseph’s 3.
Tate Hagan led off for the Flyers in the bottom of the sixth, and singled to left field. Takahiro Yamada was walked and Mitchell Garrity doubled down the left field line, bringing in Connor Wilson, who pinch ran for Hagan. Michael Cleary was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Flyers. Connor Echolsdoubled the Dayton lead with a grand slam to right field.

Top 7: Dayton 11, Saint Joseph’s 4.
Brendan Hueth singled down the right side and Andrew Cossetti drove him home with a double to right center.

Top 9: Dayton 11, Saint Joseph’s 6.
The Hawks added two in the ninth, but it was not enough.

KEY STATS

  • Hunter Wolfe pitched for 6.1 innings, throwing 9 strikeouts.
  • The Flyers hit for an overall .342 (13-38), while Saint Joseph’s hit for an overall .206 (7-34).
  • Mitchell Garrity went 3-5 today, with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the second. This is a season high for Garrity with four RBIs.
  • Connor Echols went 3-5 today, with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth. This is Echols second straight game with four RBIs.

UP NEXT
Dayton will host Saint Joseph’s tomorrow (Apr. 27) at 1:00 p.m. It is Kids’ Day and the first 100 kids will receive free Dayton Flyers Eyeblack. Kids will also be allowed to run the bases after the game.
